چکیده

High–pressure and high–temperature experiments were conducted to determine the stability field of phase Egg, AlSiO3OH, in the pressure range of 16.5–23.5 GPa and in the temperature range of 800–1500 °C. We found that phase Egg decomposes to δ–AlOOH + stishovite below ~ 1200 °C (16.5 GPa and 800 °C; 20.6 GPa and 1000 °C) and to Al–phase D + corundum + stishovite above ~ 1200 °C (21.8 GPa and 1500 °C) at P–T conditions corresponding to the mantle transition zone. This indicates that phase Egg is unstable at the top of the lower mantle and can be a water reservoir only in the mantle transition zone. In addition, the present results imply that the superdeep diamonds that include phase Egg do not originate from the lower mantle but from the wet mantle transition zone.

High-pressure phase of brucite stable at Earth's mantle transition zone and lower mantle conditions.

We investigate the high-pressure phase diagram of the hydrous mineral brucite, Mg(OH)2, using structure search algorithms and ab initio simulations. We predict a high-pressure phase stable at pressure and temperature conditions found in cold subducting slabs in Earth's mantle transition zone and lower mantle. This prediction implies that brucite can play a much more important role in water tran...

Slab dehydration in the Earth's mantle transition zone

Because of the high water solubility in wadsleyite and ringwoodite, the mantle transition zone is possibly a large water reservoir. The potentially high water content of the Earth's mantle transition zone is a key element of several global mantle dynamic models. Nevertheless, to keep the transition zone relatively wet, the tendency for convection to distribute water over the entire mantle has t...

In-situ Measurement of Elastic Velocity Contrast between MgSiO3 Enstatite Polymorphs at High Pressure

Introduction Orthopyroxene is an important mineralogical constituent of petrological models of the Earth’s upper mantle. Therefore, the reconstructive (or first-order) phase transformation between orthoenstatite (OEN, orthorhombic symmetry, space group Pbca) and highpressure clinoenstatite (HP-CEN, monoclinic symmetry, space group C2/c) is of great interest for geophysical applications. In part...

Earth's interior. Dehydration melting at the top of the lower mantle.

The high water storage capacity of minerals in Earth's mantle transition zone (410- to 660-kilometer depth) implies the possibility of a deep H2O reservoir, which could cause dehydration melting of vertically flowing mantle. We examined the effects of downwelling from the transition zone into the lower mantle with high-pressure laboratory experiments, numerical modeling, and seismic P-to-S conv...

Chemical, physical characterization and salinity distribution of the oilfield water in the Upper Sandstone Member of the Zubair reservoir at Rumaila North Oilfield, Southern Iraq

The oilfield water in the Upper Sandstone Member of the Zubair reservoir (Barriemian-Hauterivian) at Rumaila North Oil Field was investigated for the interpretation of salinity and geochemical evolution of brine compositions. The interaction of the oilfield water with reservoir rock resulted in a brine water derived from the marine water origin of partial mixing with meteoric water similar to t...
